I started each painting with observations in the real world, very often painting outside. Afterwards, I augmented the canvases with other kinds of marks and colours that heightened the sense of light and abstraction. As the painting develops, and if things go in the right direction, unpredictable things happen that propel the painting forward. The painting and I work together to express something under the surface.
