2018 4"w x 6"h watercolour, graphite on paper

These drawings were completed during my month long stay at an artist residency in the village of Tilting on Fogo Island, Newfoundland. The studio/residence is located close to a circular trail that I walked over and over again during my stay, stopping to draw, paint, photograph and observe.

On one walk that took me to a pebble beach, I found the mermaid purses amidst the stones along the strand line. These are the egg cases of skates, washed on shore after the baby fish has hatched out. I found their discarded shapes both strange and beautiful. Broad watercolour strokes create a foundation for graphite imagery. Synonyms for tilting with a nautical reference were chosen for the titles.
