These pieces were completed during my month long stay at an artist residency in the village of Tilting on Fogo Island, Newfoundland. The studio/residence is located close to a circular trail that I walked over and over again during my stay, stopping to draw, paint, photograph and observe.
On one walk that took me to a pebble beach, I found the mermaids purses amidst the stones along the strand line. These are the egg cases of skates, washed on shore after the young have hatched. I found their discarded shapes both strange and beautiful. These 6 watercolours are portraits of these small, remarkable objects, each different yet connected.
